A few hours before asteroid 2022 EB5 hit Earth on March 11, astronomers were already waiting for it. This is the fifth time an asteroid has been observed before entering our atmosphere.
First seen by Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky, the asteroid fell into an atmospheric region above the Norwegian Sea before disintegrating.
The astronomer had reported the object to the Minor Planet Center, which published the data in hopes that further observations would confirm the astronomer’s suspicion that the asteroid was on a collision course.
Then NASA’s Scout System performed measurements to calculate its trajectory and confirmed that the space stone was on its way here. There was little time to determine the possible impact sites, which stretched from western Greenland to the coast of Norway.
The tracking of this asteroid served as a real rehearsal for the planetary defense community to apply its actions and strategies.
