For Asteroid Day 2021, AstroClubul Iași Romania provided a day of activities including a word from a local celebrity astronaut, presentations, a meteorite collection and even a special cake!
The event was organized by the AstroClubul Iași, a program supported by the Academic Foundation IF2000 Iasi. The Foundation was established in 1996 by retired professors who seek to popularize science and scientific activities. Since 2016 it has been directed by Bogdan-Marian Tofanica.
Astroclub Iași was created in 2013 by Agavriloaiei Loan and Ursache Alexandru. The club hosts a number of other educational activities including Researcher’s Night, UNAWE Project and International Observe the Moon Night.
This year’s Asteroid Day event was co-hosted with Astroclubul PEGAS at the Cotnari Public Library. The day’s activities started with an introductory message from the Romanian Cosmonaut and Co-Chair of the Asteroid Foundation Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu on the significance and importance of the event.
Activities were hosted at the Cotnari Public Library.
Bogdan then gave a presentation on asteroids, followed by the exhibition of the meteorite collection by AstroClubul member Iasi Agavriloaiei Ioan. Students then made observations of the Sun.
Astroclub Pegas celebrated their 5 year anniversary on June 30th.
Since Asteroid Day coincides with the anniversary of the creation of Astroclub Pegas, participants celebrated with a delicious birthday cake.
Children from primary, secondary and high school all join for the Club’s Asteroid Day events so they can learn more and have an opportunity to get together.
“Asteroid Day is one of our main activities during the year. It is perfectly placed in the summer, the day is long and the kids are on holiday”, says Bogdan.
When asked what he enjoys the most about hosting these events Bogdan wrote, “The joy of the kids.”
