It’s time to explore how North America celebrated the 10th anniversary of Asteroid Day. The United States, Canada, and Mexico all organised events and took inspiring actions to remind the public why understanding asteroids, their potential impact risks, and methods for monitoring them matters more than ever. Let’s take a look at what happened across the continent:

In Canada, the Club d’Astronomie de Charlevoix in Quebec hosted a special skywatching session focused on the Moon’s impact craters. This article explains how observing our natural satellite creates a tangible connection to the story of asteroid impacts throughout our Solar System.

We love showcasing the creativity and artistic talents that help celebrate our global movement. A brilliant example is Hamilton-based multi-artist and , who used his unique talents to produce a playful short video in celebration of the day.

In the United States, major events unfolded in Arizona, particularly at the Meteor Crater & Barringer Space Museum and the Lowell Observatory. Highlights included the Schweickart Prize ceremony, a talk and book signing by award-winning science fiction and non-fiction author Mary Robinette Kowal, a series of lectures, workshops, and a guided tour of one of the world’s most famous impact craters.

Another important moment was the resolution introduced by former astronaut and Senator Mark Kelly, along with Senator John Cornyn, recognising 30th June as National Asteroid Day in the US. This resolution is expected to increase public understanding of asteroids, planetary defence, and space science, as well as stimulate debate, research funding, and preparedness. May this action inspire other places around the world to adopt similar initiatives.

In Mexico, a countrywide celebration saw the mobilisation of museums, planetariums, and astronomy clubs across numerous cities. A rich programme of activities made the 10th anniversary unforgettable. Take a look at just some of the highlights:
