In 2022, Japan SpaceGuard, a non-profit organisation created in 1996 with the main objective of observing NEOs (Near Earth Objects), dedicated their Asteroid Day event to asteroid observation and the historic Hayabusa2 mission.
Asteroid Day was introduced to Japan SpaceGuard by Prof. Makoto Yoshikawa, Mission Manager for Hayabusa2 at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and one of Japan SpaceGuard founders.
The organisation’s first Asteroid Day event took place in 2016 in the city of Kurashiki. In the following years, Japan SpaceGuard kept promoting planetary defence to the general public by organising online sessions.
In 2021, Asteroid Day Special Talk in Japan was hosted by Masaoki Hagino and Seitaro Urakawa. It was broadcasted on Zoom and YouTube with an audience of hundreds of people. Their public is very interested in space and asteroids and thanks to these events they can get the latest updates about cutting-edge asteroid research.
The 2022 edition of Japan SpaceGuard Asteroid Day was held as a hybrid event, with in-person and online presentations at Sagamihara City Museum and Kakuda City Space Tower Cosmo House.
We would like to thank Japan SpaceGuard for their continued support of Asteroid Day’s mission to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities presented by asteroids.
