HORIZONS System, JPL, NASA
The scientific podcast Radiolab, in partnership with the International Astronomical Union, launched a global naming contest for one of Earth’s quasi-moons, the asteroid designated (164207) 2004 GU9.
This contest will take place in three stages, the first from June to September 2024. Suggestions will be analysed by a panel of judges in October, who will select 10 finalists. The finalists will be put to a public vote in November and December 2024, and the winner of the Competition will be announced in January 2025.
Quasi-moons or Quasi-satellites (not to be confused with mini-moons) are asteroids that orbit the Sun following a trajectory similar to that of the planet. Because of the relative motion of both objects, the asteroid appears to be orbiting Earth from the perspective of an observer situated on the planet. Among some examples of quasi-moons we have 2006 FV35, 2013 LX28, 2014 OL339, 469219 Kamoʻoalewa, 2020 PP1 and 2023 FW13
