In recent years, Colombia has been one of the highlights of Asteroid Day. The Colombian Asteroid Festival offers its audience a wide variety of activities, with free access to related events.

The festival has been spearheaded by two universities, Universidad Sergio Arboleda and Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas.  Both institutions have been operational for over 30 years with their main campuses in the capital, Bogotá.

The first edition took place in 2021 where due to the pandemic, the festival featured several online attractions. The following year, further institutions joined the two universities to hold workshops, exhibitions and conferences on asteroids.

In 2023, the Colombian Asteroid Festival was held in April in recognition of the first recorded  meteorite in the country. The object, reported to be a fireball shooting through the night sky, was identified April 20, 1810 at the location of Santa Rosa de Viterbo – Boyacá.

The last event featured a contest where students from several schools had the chance to plan a planetary defence mission.  The ideas for protecting Earth from dangerous asteroids were presented in poster format and were displayed in the halls of the venue.

Organiser, Adriana Araújo, Physics PhD at Universidad Sergio Arboleda, explained that she had already known about Asteroid Day when she decided to search the internet for more information on how to host these events to makethe festival a reality. She thinks that events like this are capable of bringing knowledge about asteroids to everyone.
