NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART impact, successfully took place on September 26th, when the mission spacecraft hit asteroid moonlet Dimorphos—a 161.5-meter diameter asteroid.
This truly historic event got featured in the news all over the world. DART impact even made it to the famous Jimmy Kimmel Live! late-night talk show.
It’s not the first time that Jimmy Kimmel mentions the topic of planetary defense in his show. In 2015 he covered the reading of the United Nations declaration establishing Asteroid Day as an annual global event. Asteroid Day co-founders Brian May and Grigorij Richters together with Lord Martin Rees made an appearance in this episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
