Astronauts, experts, and scientists join Asteroid Day to educate and inspire about asteroids and space

LUXEMBOURG (31 May 2024) — The Asteroid Foundation invites to the 9th Asteroid Day with two major events in Luxembourg: The Asteroid Day Lecture on 28th June and the Asteroid Day Festival on 29th June.

The programme aims to highlight the importance and impact of space on Earth and attract a wide audience to learn about asteroids, space science, and business.

Asteroid Day is a United Nations-recognised event held annually on 30 June, as an official day in the UN calendar. It is a programme of the Asteroid Foundation, based in Luxembourg, which wants to inspire its audience about space and asteroids, their role in the formation of our solar system, the use of space resources, space exploration, space science, and business, and the protection of our planet.

Last year, Asteroid Day attracted 800 visitors in Luxembourg and thousands of visitors online around the world.

“Space plays an increasingly important role in the development of our economy and society”, said Markus Payer, Chair of the Asteroid Foundation. “For the ninth consecutive year, Asteroid Day gathers a global community of people who are passionate about space and want to learn about the history of our solar system, the future of space exploration, technologies and businesses, and ways to protect and prosper our planet. We are particularly eager to attract young and talented people and give companies of the flourishing space cluster in Luxembourg an excellent opportunity to showcase their activities and tell their stories. We thank our sponsors and partners, in particular the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), and look forward to making Asteroid Day 2024 another success.”

Asteroid Day’s 2024 programme is built on three pillars:

The Astronaut and Expert Schools Visits on the 27th and 28th of June, when astronauts will deliver a presentation to inspire teachers and students in Luxembourg.

The Asteroid Day Space Lecture on 28 June 2024 at Cercle Cité Luxembourg, co-branded with the European Space Agency and the Luxembourg Space Agency, will give space enthusiasts the opportunity to peek into asteroid and space research. It offers an interested public the opportunity to listen to three presentations experts from scientists from the center CNRS, the Emirates Space Agency, and the University of Zurich. Before digging deeper into the HERA Mission with a Keynote by GOMSpace and an interactive panel presenting “The latest news and outlook”. The lecture will be live-streamed on www.asteroidday. org.

The Asteroid Day Festival on 29 June at Cercle Cité Luxembourg, which addresses a wide public who is passionate about space and eager to meet prestigious scientists, experts, cosmonauts, and astronauts such as Mark Polansky, Julie Payette, Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu and Patrick Michel. The festival invites children, students, and adults to a series of panels, discussions, and workshops to learn about space and enjoy playing with space animations and applications.
