QUESTION FROM LINDA STEPP
I read an article that stated the meteor struck in the lake; was this true, and can they estimate how large it was on impact?
ANSWER BY PETER BROWN (ADXP)
Dear Linda
The main meteorite mass recovered from the bottom of Lake Cheberkal weighed about 600 kg and was actually video recorded impacting the lake by a security camera on shore. By looking at how the fragment slowed down in the atmosphere from the many dashcam recordings of the fireball, the initial estimate put its mass around 400-500kg, which turned out to be very close to what was recovered.
