Prof. Dr. Djamila Aouada is the founder and head of the Computer Vision, Imaging and Machine Intelligence (CVI2) research group at the University of Luxembourg’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT), where she serves as Senior Research Scientist and Assistant Professor. Additionally, she heads the Computer Vision Lab and co-heads the Zero-Gravity Space Lab. Having received her engineering degree in electronics from the École Nationale Polytechnique (ENP) in Algiers in 2005, and her Ph.D. in Computer Vision in 2009 from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in the United States, Dr. Aouada took up the challenge to move to Luxembourg to establish a leading research program in the field of Computer Vision at the newly founded SnT, elevating Luxembourg’s presence in the global Computer Vision community. Dr. Aouada’s research interests span image processing, computer vision, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
She has provided consultancy services for esteemed laboratories such as Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, Alcatel Lucent Bell Labs in New Jersey, and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Moreover, Dr. Aouada has chaired numerous workshops and conferences within her research domains including the SPARK international challenge promoting AI for orbital sensing and space navigation.
Since 2023, she has been appointed as member of the Algerian AI Board and the UK ART AI Board at the University of Bath, further contributing to the advancement of AI initiatives. Dr. Aouada is passionate about public outreach, particularly in promoting and encouraging women in science. She served as the Chair of the IEEE Benelux Women in Engineering Affinity Group from 2014 to 2016.
