As one of the leading creative voices in the entertainment industry today, Alex Kurtzman is known for his ability to bring complex source material to the screen with character-driven stories grounded in reality.
In 2015, Kurtzman launched his new production company, Secret Hideout, and signed an overall TV deal with CBS Studios. Through the company, Kurtzman co-created and is executive producing the critically acclaimed Star Trek: Discovery, which recently premiered on both CBS and its streaming counterpart CBS All Access and has already been renewed for a second season. He is also an executive producer on CBS summer event series Salvation, which has also been picked up for a second season, and on the upcoming mid-season series Instinct. The company is also currently in development on the nuclear submarine drama, Trident, with writer David Wilcox and on Recall, a crime drama about a group of NSA investigators given access to a tool that allows them to access a person’s memories, that reunites the company with Limitless writer Craig Sweeney and pilot director Marc Webb.
In addition, Kurtzman is continuing to produce shows from his former K/O Paper Products banner under the new production company including the upcoming fourth season of the critically-acclaimed series Scorpion and the eighth season of Hawaii Five-0 on CBS. The company’s supernatural series, Sleepy Hollow, recently wrapped a successful four years on Fox in 2017. Kurtzman, along with Roberto Orci and J.J. Abrams, previously co-created and executive produced the popular show Fringe, which ended its five-season run in 2013.
Outside of TV, Kurtzman has co-written some of the decade’s biggest films including Star Trek, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Amazing Spider Man 2, Transformers and Mission: Impossible III and has directed films such as The Mummy and People Like Us. Additionally, he executive produced the romantic comedy The Proposal as well as the Now You See Me franchise. Overall, his writing and producing credits have earned over $4 billion worldwide.
Kurtzman began his career writing for the popular TV series Hercules. He went on to write for Xena: Warrior Princess, where he moved up the ranks to become a head writer for the show at the age of 23. Next, he wrote for J.J. Abrams’ popular series Alias, leading to a fruitful and collaborative relationship with Abrams. He eventually served as an executive producer on the show.
