The collaboration between a Colombian and a Venezuelan has resulted in some of the most creative and memorable Asteroid Day events.
Astrocuentos Bien Conta2 is a science outreach project founded in 2020 by Colombian astronomer Kevin Ipia and Venezuelan industrial engineer Daniela Oviedo.
Their partnership began in 2018, blending both personal and professional elements, and intertwining their shared experiences, passions, and stories. Their mutual love for poetry, literature, and the digital world led them to explore science communication in an unconventional and creative way – through engaging and educational rhymes.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, forcing the world into lockdown, virtual interactions became essential. In this context, Kevin and Daniela recognised the need to create educational content that could be accessed online, leading to the birth of Astrocuentos Bien Conta2. The project offers a unique approach to explaining the universe’s phenomena, using various digital tools to engage a growing audience.
It was through social media that the couple discovered Asteroid Day, and its theme inspired them deeply. The initiative aims to encourage young people to pursue studies in Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, and other scientific fields. Prior to this, they had been involved in the IASC (International Asteroid Search Campaign) for Colombia and Venezuela, contributing to the provisional discovery of three asteroids: 2021 VY9, 2022 SQ71, and 2022 UD61.
Over the years, Astrocuentos Bien Conta2 has captivated people of all ages and from different countries, becoming a leading reference in the Spanish-speaking world. Some of their most memorable content includes the 2023 series on asteroids named after Latin American figures and places, as well as a collection of educational games and models made from low-cost materials, published in 2024.
The project also collaborates with specialists and partners in live sessions about asteroids and planetary defence, with these events becoming highlights of their involvement in Asteroid Day. Astrocuentos Bien Conta2 is a shining example of how love, dedication, creativity, and a passion for teaching can transform the way we connect with knowledge and science.
