The Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences (MAST, because the acronym in portugues) in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) is an institution focused on research in areas such as Science Education, History of Science, Museology and Archive. Among the educational actions promoted by the museum we have the “Cycle of Lectures”, which takes place the fourth Saturday of each month, where a researcher of Astronomy or the related areas is invited to present his research work in a didactic way for the public of museum.
The Science, Technology and Innovation Fair (FECTI, because the acronym in portugues) is an event organized by the CECIERJ Foundation (Fundação Centro de Ciências do Rio de Janeiro), that summons students and teachers of elementary and secondary education to motivate their abilities to develop research in science, technology and innovation.
In 2018, durant the XII FECTI, regarding the quality of the research works presented by girls and boys, ages 12 to 18, and the importance of sharing this production outside the school context, we created in MAST a space to show the research work of these young people. This space is called “Junior lecturers at MAST (Ciclo de Palestras Mirim)”, similar to our “Cycle of Lectures”. It happens the fifth Saturday of March, June, August and November.
The next date, June 29, at “Junior lecturers at MAST”, we want to link our activity to the commemoration of AsteroidDay.
We will receive 4 teams of young researchers who have developed works related to Astronomy at the last FECTI. The young researchers of “Escola Municipal Francisco de Assis Medeiros Rangel” from Rio das Ostras, will show its proposal “Models of the Solar System and Phases of the Moon for Special Students”. Representing “Colégio Estadual Canadá”, from Nova Friburgo, will be presented the work “Disseminating Astronomy in the School : A discussion on the Cassini Mission”. The young team of “Educandário Senhor do Bonfim”, from Japerí, will present the experimental work “Studying the Black Body”, about this important concept of Physics; and the students of “Escola Municipal Dr. Getúlio Vargas”, from Campos dos Goytacazes, will bring us the study “Halophilic Archaeobacteria in Space”.
In addition, to illustrate the audience about asteroids and meteorites, Professor Marcelo Fernandes, coordinator of the Rio Astronomy Network, will offer the short lecture “Cosmic Fragments: A Brief History of Meteorites”. The teacher will also share with the MAST audience some of the pieces from his collection of meteorites, which will be displayed in the hall of the auditorium on June 29 and 30. The activity is free, and will happen between 3 – 6 p.m. The lecture of Professor Fernandes will also be held on Sunday, June 30, at 4:00 p.m.
The activities will be transmited by the faacebook site of MAST: https://www.facebook.com/museuastronomia/
