The Asteroid Day 2022 Latvia will be organized on the 30th of June and the 2nd of July in the Museum of Meteorites in Riga.
The 8th Asteroid Day in Latvia will focus on this year’s upcoming NASA DART cosmic experiment — the first planetary defense test mission with a practical goal to change the asteroid orbit and the upcoming ESA mission to measure the orbit change. There will be discussions about many aspects of asteroid research, their Earth threats, and their relation to meteorites.
Special attention will be paid to our meteorite of the year (Erg Chech 002), which is the oldest discovered magmatic rock in the Solar system!
This year we will also continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NASA Apollo 16 mission that carried the Latvian flag to the Moon in 1972.
