This is an initiative of Triple Helix Science Club of Department of Physics(AIDED), Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, Chennai to spread awareness about asteroids and their impact on earth. It also promotes life long learning opportunities for all under SDG 4.

In December 2016, The United Nations General Assembly declared 30 June as International Asteroid Day. This annual International event is observed each year on the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, the most known harmful asteroid related event on earth in the recent history. International Asteroid Day aims to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard and to inform the public about the crisis communication actions to be taken at the global level in case of a credible near-Earth object threat. Many events are live streamed on this day from different parts of the globe. “The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it became that the human race has been living on borrowed time,” remarked Brian May, co-founder of Asteroid Day Foundation.

Ancient Indians observed stars and constellations for ascertaining auspicious times in order to conduct sacrificial rites. It is but natural that they would have recounted in the vedic texts about comets. There are references to dhumaketus and ketus, in ancient Indian scriptures, which stand for comets in Sanskrit.
In a few Indian compositions like Atharva Veda, Parāsara Samhitā (samhitā – collection of hymns), Mahābhārata and Purāṇas etc. The word “ketu” appears meaning a serendipitous/unusual phenomenon such as a comet or a meteor. There are references to comets in our country’s epics Ramayana and Mahabharata too. Indian astronomy acted as a catalyst for the growth of mathematics in the subcontinent, one of the greatest legacies passed on by India to the western World
