July 2 is Solar Eclipse Day and Asteroid Day at the IFMG Bambuí Astronomical Observatory. On July 2, 2019 (Tuesday) there will be a solar eclipse. The best places to observe are in Chile and Argentina where the eclipse will be complete. In our region, the eclipse will be partial, about 20% of the Sun will be shrouded by the moon’s shadow. In Bambuí, the eclipse will begin at 5:06 p.m. and be observed until sunset at 5:36 p.m.
Attention! Observing the eclipse without adequate protective equipment can cause permanent damage to vision. At the astronomical observatory you can observe the eclipse safely, with appropriate equipment. July 2 also has Asteroid Day at the Astronomical Observatory of the IFMG Campus Bambuí. Asteroid Day is a worldwide awareness campaign that calls people from all over the world to learn about asteroids and meteors and find solutions to protect our planet from possible meteors that may hit Earth. Brazil is one of the countries that joined this campaign and the IFMG Astronomical Observatory – Bambuí Campus will also participate. On July 2, at 6:00 p.m., in room 1 of the pedagogical building (block A) will be given a lecture about asteroids, meteors and meteorites. Subsequently, participants will be able to observe asteroids, planets, nebulae, star clusters and other celestial bodies at the campus Astronomical Observatory.
