The National Air & Space Museum celebrates Asteroid Day with an expert panel discussion on asteroids and the threats and opportunities they present to our human species. NASA planetary defense experts, a veteran NASA astronaut, a Smithsonian planetary scientist, and engineers building the first spacecraft to change an asteroid’s orbit discuss the latest progress in defending Earth from a potential destructive impact by a rogue near-Earth object.

 Invited panelists include:

  • Jim Zimbelman, planetary scientist at the National Air & Space Museum
  • Lindley Johnson, director of NASA’s planetary defense coordination office
  • Tom Jones, veteran NASA astronaut and asteroid scientist
  • DART Engineer, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab

 Questions from the live and online audience will follow the panel discussion.
